I've played 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons a few times now and I can honestly say I don't care if I ever play it again. It doesn't deserve to carry the D&D label, even more so than 3rd edition didn't deserve it. I was excited and gungho about the new edition at first, but in retrospect it seems I was just excited for anything but 3rd edition. The rule set is now nothing more than a dumbed down grid-battle game that is aiming itself at MMORPG and CCG players alike. Everything from the "healing surge" system to being able to play as a freaking "half-dragon" or an emo-kid "tiefling" just screams cheesiness. In a nutshell, it's a full-out munchkin fest. Even the artwork associated with the new edition is the kind of stuff you'd associate with card games or MMORPGs or even manga.... Don't get me wrong, the system works and it's possible to have fun with it. But, it's NOT Dungeons and Dragons. 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons was the good stuff. There wasn't a dang thing wrong with it. If you couldn't get your head around the armor class and THAC0 system, then you had no business playing it anyway. It was awesome. I have prepared some visual aids to help illustrate my point. ![]() Just a glance at the Player's Handbooks lets us know that 2nd Edition meant business, whereas the common manga whore at Barnes and Noble would be hard pressed to not pick up the 4th Edition books. ![]() If it still doesn't make sense to you, let me make another comparison that is along the same lines: ![]() Still not getting it? Let's try this: ![]() That pretty much sums it up, right there. |
